Shelley and Ivonne Win Pritzker Prize as Architectural Partners

Shelley and Ivonne Win Pritzker Prize as Architectural Partners

In the field of architecture, the perfect combination of creativity and functionality has made two names stand out: Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell. These two distinguished architects are the founders of Grafton Architects, winners of the prestigious Pritzker Prize. Let’s take an in-depth look at their journey, their famous works, and the unique styles that set them apart.

Getting to know Ivonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara

Ivonne and Shelley were born in Ireland in 1951 and 1952 respectively. The two met at the University of Dublin where they discovered a shared passion for creating space, inspiring and connecting people. And with the duo later serving as professors in the University of Dublin’s Department of Architecture, it’s safe to say they’re a perfect match.

Their architectural careers

Shelley and Yvonne founded Grafton Architects in 1978, and since then their career has been a tapestry of innovation and excellence. Their work spans continents, from educational institutions to cultural landmarks, and each project reflects their commitment to quality and creativity.

Their approach to architecture is holistic, taking into account the cultural, environmental, and social context of each project. This dedication has earned them numerous awards and honors, and they were awarded the 2020 Pritzker Prize.

Architectural works

The partner’s work, which spanned more than four decades, left behind several architectural works, and these among them give us an insight into their style.

University of Engineering and Technology

This is a private university in Lima, Peru, and the building was awarded the Silver Lion at the 13th Venice Biennale. It is worth noting that the site is situated in the middle of a highway and a low-rise residential area, and it was a question of how to conceptualize the overall structure of the campus.

The main material used for the campus is concrete, which emphasizes a sense of strength. The building is not only a structure but also a vertical campus. The use of staggered design blends in with the urban landscape. The design reflects the rugged terrain of Lima, using concrete and open spaces to mimic the surrounding cliffs. The entire building contains terraces, gardens, teaching, and office areas, with the library on the top floor.

Bocconi University

Located in Milan Italy, the school is a historic university, and it was Shelley and Ivonne who were responsible for the construction of the school’s School of Economics. The entire school is located in the middle of a neighborhood and has spaces such as lecture halls, conference halls, and a library. It is more of a community center than a campus.

The building features a series of overlapping volumes that create dynamic spaces for students and faculty. Natural light and open areas are utilized to foster a sense of community and engagement. This is a perfect example of how architecture can enhance the educational experience.

London School of Economics and Political Science

The Marshall Building on campus was designed by Grafton Architects and opened in 2022. It houses the departments of management, accounting, and finance. The appearance of the entire building then looks like several different panels cobbled together but with similarities. The presence of glass allows natural light to enter and appear softer. Inside, the pillars and spiral staircases represent the unique styles of the two architects. Their buildings and spaces should reflect the spirit of diversity, openness, tolerance, and humanistic care.

Urban Institute of Ireland

Located at the University of Dublin in Ireland, the institute brings together engineers, planners, and other academics, in addition to architects, to discuss sustainable development. With a façade of terra cotta tiles, red brick, and granite, the design emphasizes green space and energy efficiency, reflecting their dedication to environmental responsibility. This project demonstrates their ability to create buildings that are not only visually striking but also environmentally conscious.

Their architectural style

You can easily see that the architectural style of the two architects is different from that of Zaha and Frank Owen Gehry, who were full of strong personal styles before. Their style is modern, so you can find most of their works are large-scale public buildings and mostly campuses. They also prioritize light and space, focusing more on the human experience and life, improving the quality of these public buildings, and contributing to human society on an ongoing basis.

Conclusion

Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell have left an indelible mark on the architectural world. Their partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration and shared vision. Through innovative design and a commitment to excellence, they have transformed spaces across the globe, making architecture not just a profession, but a way of life.

Their receipt of the Pritzker Prize is a fitting recognition of their contributions and a tribute to their unique approach to design. As they continue to inspire future generations of architects, one thing is clear: Shelley and Yvonne not only built buildings but also established a legacy that will endure for years to come.
